For relative newbies Hammond Academy of Science and Technology, their wildcard placement in the Division B/middle school section was nothing short of a nail-biter. The mousetrap in one of the events broke, their “Mission Impossible” project was misaligned and a bottle rocket ended up on a roof, coach Tracy Mis said. As if it couldn’t get any worse, one of the students had a death in the family, so several contestants were competing in events for which they had not studied.
“It was a very rough day,” Hammond Academy assistant coach Carrie Hutton said. “We’re just very grateful for the opportunity.”
